Mogherini’s successor, Josep Borrell, demanded anti-Russian sanctions to be maintained

“The best way to oppose Russian expansionism or, if you want, Russian threat – is to help Ukraine to enhance resilience and ability to implement reforms,” said Josep Borrell, candidate for the post of The High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy.

“We need to maintain sanctions against Russia until changes in its behavior take place,” he said at a meeting of the European Parliament in Brussels.

The new head of European diplomacy should start assuming his duties on November 1 after being approved by the European Parliament. The candidacy of the Spanish Foreign Ministry head is approved by the EU leaders. He should replace Mogherini, whose mandate expires at the end of October.
