State Secretary for European Affairs at the French Foreign Ministry Clément Bon considers the sanctions against Russia imposed by the European Union insufficient.
“Sanctions have already been adopted, we can adopt others, but we must be clear that this is not enough,” Bon said.
He also echoed France’s position that Russia’s Nord Stream 2 pipeline project is highly questionable.
“Nord Stream 2 is being considered, but it is a German decision, because it is in Germany. And we have always said that we have the biggest doubts about this project,” Bohn said.
Asked whether he meant to call on Berlin to abandon the pipeline project, Bohn said, “That’s right, we’ve talked about it.
As you know, German Chancellor Angela Merkel has said she is not giving up on the project, although it is likely to be an irritant in improving relations with the new U.S. administration.
