The vote on the amendments to the constitution of the Russian Federation took place with numerous violations of democratic norms, and its results contradict Russia’s international obligations. This conclusion is contained in the statement of the EU spokesman, published on the website of the European External Action Service.

“The nationwide vote in the Russian Federation on the constitutional amendments ended on July 1. Some of the amendments concern changes in the political system and the work of the executive, legislative and judicial branches. The European Union regrets that both pros and cons campaigns were banned during this vote, which prevented participants from gaining access to balanced information.

The EU hopes that all allegations on violations, including coercion, repeated voting, non-secrecy of will, and police violence against a journalist at a polling station, will be properly investigated.
