Illegal elections in Crimea
The US and EU invalidate elections in the Russia-annexed Crimea held on September 8, 2019, as part of Russia’s Unified Voting Day.
“We don’t recognize the results of the so-called “elections” conducted by the occupying Russian power. We condemn Russia’s illegal actions in the Crimea and reaffirm our unwavering support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity”, says the announcement of the embassy of the US in Ukraine.
The spokesperson for the European External Relations Service published an official press release: “Anybody elected in the Crimean peninsula claiming to “represent” the populations of Crimea and Sevastopol will not be recognized as representatives of those territories, which are Ukrainian”.
The Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a communique, emphasized that “the actions taken by the Russian power in the occupied Crimea are illegal and the results of the “elections invalid”. It drew the attention of the international community” to the deterioration of the human rights situation in Crimea, restriction of civil and religious freedom, regular illegal detention of persons” – and called for solidarity” in opposition those actions implemented by Russia in the annexed peninsula”.
Separately, several foreign ministries of the EU, Georgia, and Moldova have published statements on non-recognition of voting in the occupied Crimea and on support for the territorial integrity of Ukraine.
